Hymn from a Hillside in New England

Hymn from a Hillside in New England

Now and again my heart and hands
long for a simple garden to tend
or a dirt road that gently bends
towards a landscape free of man.
Where this earth slowly expands
north to nowhere and skies heal
lupine blue; where the very feel
and look of light is textured and tin-
smith silvered washing over stands
of maples and birches that dance
in a windless silence
helping to better frame a land
of slow-rolling hills, stone walls and
open pasture, where change comes slow
and where one can never know
if a life’s beginning or near its end.
