I threw out my shadows
wore a dress made out of
sunlight, startling the clouds into
hiding;
they wept as they went
once I became the light,
luminescence reborn,
I walked all the way to the shore,
glowing footprints igniting the sand
the waters had been waiting for me –
waves shaking in anticipation,
salt catching the tangles of my hair; a
soft breeze kissing secrets onto my skin
I reached the shallow end and I knelt,
melted the dress until the
water
was burning at the touch,
light leaking from my fingertips
once the pain stopped, I was washed
ashore; a lone ship, passing through the
night, provided only few witnesses
to the dying of the light.
Tamara Bašić (she/her) lives in Croatia, where she is frequently trying to pluck gorgeous sentences from her thoughts and write them into poetry. She can also often be found reading, trying to become a polyglot, staring at the sky in awe, and viciously daydreaming. Her work is featured or forthcoming in Southchild Lit, Ice Lolly Review, celestite poetry, Lavender Lime Literary, fifth wheel press, and elsewhere.
