Kansas

Oil painting of a Kansas setting at sundown, there are two bison drinking from a river and a large tree across from them
a place where south winds blow
against plains of wild dreams;
insights of the west
mindful of the east
and located in America’s chest
red-tail hawks soar open skies
searching for unlucky meals;
pausing, wings flapping
contemplating the snatching
as the prairie grass sways, watching
Indian summer, Indian winter
witnessing both is the curse of this land;
cold flurries dancing on sunflowers
roaring thunder background showers
as tornados pass through backyard towers
unchartered paths soiled hands protect
wheat-filled air, our home signature
forever a free state
the most honorable trait
ad astra per aspera to open this gate
