Driving River Road In April

Oil painting of a road with pine trees along the road
It is after all, a rough time.
Muck and mud. Forsythia raging.
Frigid sky for miles. Every hint of green
that pushes through undauntedly
will flourish with the certainty
of brighter days ahead.
Behold as small deaths give way.
Bittercress          crocus            blue phlox
forcibly breaking ground, reestablishing
their rightful places
in the strewn thawing acres
of fields nearly overcome
by last season’s remnants. The ground
steadying for more to come.
