night/cabin/lakeside

Painting of a cabin on a small hill near a body of water
in the afternoon’s garden/ in the casualty – from the root
casual – of a chance
occurrence/ our encounter cloaked
in the reservoir of early evening in the parsimoniousness
of dying light
could be its fortune benched for plenty
row-upon-row gloaming/ a mongrel
fragrance of rosemary & lavender reaching
for threshold in a vigil of sprinkling in near nighttime
scratching – squirrels in the attic bats under
the eaves –
& a cabin’s enveloping
black sky scarring/ starry pinpricks I can’t single
out – such torrent & opulence/ openings
& closings                          & possibilities –
& our only constant: mosquito clouds of love
for blood           buzzing around our heads
